On April 30, 2026, the Tzu Chi P04 TSN-EPEC (Southern District Environmental Protection Education Centre) was invited to SJK(C) Yang Cheng in Penang to conduct an environmental awareness activity for teachers and students. A total of 117 students, the headmaster, and 15 teachers attended the event. Seventeen Tzu Chi volunteers took part, including three international students from Tilting Future.
The theme of the activity was “The Earth is Our Home.” During the session, volunteers first taught the students basic environmental knowledge and practical tips, including the Five Essential Treasures – a reusable cup, bowl, chopsticks, handkerchief, and shopping bag. They also introduced the 5R sign language: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, and Recycle, as well as the Ten-Fingers Recycling Mnemonics sign language, which covers bottles, cans, paper, batteries, clothes, 3C products, hardware, other items, and zero food waste.
Volunteers encouraged students to bring the Five Essentials when going out with their parents, reduce the use of disposable products, minimize pollution, actively sort recyclables at home, and apply the 5R principles to all aspects of life – clothing, food, housing, and transportation. Two short environmental videos were also shared to deepen the students’ understanding of environmental protection.
In addition, volunteers designed fun environmental simulation games for the students, including waste sorting, the 5R game, Snakes and Ladders, and a game on saving marine animals. Through these games, students reviewed what they had learned, self-assessed their knowledge, and reinforced their learning outcomes.
The principal shared with the volunteers that he has set one day each month as the school’s Environmental Day. His dedication to environmental protection is truly commendable. At the end of the activity, every student who participated in the games received a small gift as encouragement.
We are grateful to the school for once again inviting Tzu Chi to join hands in sharing ways to protect our common home, the Earth.
