During a home visit, Jaishree, a nurse at the Penang Dialysis Centre, realised that language was a barrier between her and her patients. In that moment, she made a heartfelt decision: to learn Mandarin—so she could listen more deeply, care more fully, and connect more sincerely.
Inspired by Master Cheng Yen’s teaching,“One gives rise to infinity; infinity arises from one” her journey began. What started with one nurse has now grown into a group of six. Every Monday after work, they choose to stay for class instead of going home, grateful to Sister Yunmei for patiently teaching them with love and guidance.
On July 21, only two nurses—Marcella and Jaishree—were able to attend the second Mandarin lesson, but they came exceptionally prepared. They had reviewed teaching videos, hand-drawn anatomy diagrams in Chinese, and answered questions with enthusiasm and confidence. Head Nurse Kai Lun also joined them, offering her encouragement.
Their dedication reflects a simple truth: even a single word in a patient’s language can carry a world of care.
❤️ One more phrase in Mandarin, one step closer to the heart. 💖
