Mr.Lau suffered severe vision loss due to diabetes and was diagnosed with kidney atrophy in 2022, requiring long-term dialysis. Unable to work and financially drained, he even contemplated giving up on life. Since 2022, the Penang Tzu Chi Dialysis Centre has provided him with completely free dialysis treatment, relieving him of the heavy financial burden.
The nursing team not only provided regular dialysis but also took turns pushing him in a wheelchair to hospital appointments. Meanwhile, Tzu Chi’s medical home care team stepped in to assess his physical condition and tailored a rehabilitation plan, with a physiotherapist guiding him through lower limb strength training three times a week. After three months of consistent effort, Mr.Lau is finally able to stand and walk again—rising from despair, both physically and emotionally.

💖Humanitarian Care with Heart — Meeting Needs Beyond the Medical
In Mr.Lau nearly blind world, the care from Tzu Chi volunteers became a source of warmth and light. When they noticed he was wearing oversized shoes, they patiently made two trips to find a proper-fitting pair to prevent him from falling. Even though he couldn’t see, Mr.Lau could recognize the shoes’ design and color through touch, feeling seen and respected.
Volunteers also accompanied him to Penang St. Nicholas’ Home for the Blind to apply for school admission and discussed short- and long-term training plans. From physical mobility to emotional support and life direction, Tzu Chi stepped in with full-hearted care. All of this was made possible because of Tzu Chi Dialysis Centre has been providing him with free dialysis consistently and steadily for nearly four years since 2022. Tzu Chi’s unwavering care and support have carried his burden and allowed him to live with peace of mind.

🌟 A Life Transformed — Focusing on What’s Still Possible
With Tzu Chi’s support, Mr.Lau gradually began to transform his life. No longer stuck in self-pity, he actively pursued life skills. He learned to walk with a white cane, eventually earning a walking certificate. He also trained in bamboo basket weaving at St. Nicholas’ Home, passing the assessment and receiving certification—taking steps toward independence.
Inspired by the stories shared by Tzu Chi volunteers, he also started working on quitting smoking and drinking. The free dialysis services from Tzu Chi Dialysis Centre since 2022 not only lifted his financial burden but also served as a beacon of hope, guiding him through this new chapter. Mr.Lau said, “Don’t focus on what you’ve lost. Focus on what you still have.” — a reflection of his renewed outlook on life.
