At this year’s Patient Family Day, Mr. Bok received the “Benefiting Self and Others” Commendation Award. This recognition honors his consistency in caring for himself while supporting others.
In his youth, he once lost his way at a difficult crossroads in life and endured the weight of judgment from those around him. Before joining the Tzu Chi Dialysis Centre, he lived in isolation—alone at home, without communication devices, entertainment, or regular interaction.

A turning point came when a nurse from the health screening team invited him to join volunteer training. Over the past two years, he gradually became involved in the kitchen, the bakery, bamboo bank making, and assisting fellow patients with limited mobility. He approached each task with discipline, punctuality, and care.

He shared that he was surprised to receive the award, never expecting recognition. “I just did what felt right,” he said. At Tzu Chi, he felt treated with kindness, and in extending help to others, he saw smiles and relief in return.

His transformation quietly touched those around him, family members and neighbours began to soften. A brother who once barely spoke to him now invites him to dinner regularly. Relatives who are visiting also felt deeply reassured with his positive changes.

His story proves that dignity and light can flourish even through dialysis.
